Encapsulating Canberra’s history by celebrating one of Canberra’s most legendary creative partnerships.
ABOUT THE MARION
Her name was Marion Mahony, and her impact on Lake Burley Griffin and Canberra has been underrepresented in our collective history, until now.
While we credit Walter Burley Griffin as the founding mastermind of Canberra’s civic design, few know of Marion Mahony, Walter’s long time creative and romantic collaborator, who’s contribution to the design of Canberra’s iconic city and lake has gone largely undocumented and unrecognised.
We honour Marion Mahony and her creative contribution to the magnificent city of Canberra, from our stunning lakeside vantage, ‘The Marion’.
“Many know her in relation to her work undertaken for Frank Lloyd Wright, and with her husband and business partner Walter Burley Griffin, but she was an incredible architect in her own right. As a woman beginning her career in the 1890’s, being able to stand on her own two feet was no easy task for Mahony, despite her clear talent.”
– Hames Sharley, Architects
In the spirit of celebrating this marriage of minds and those unsung visionaries erased from books of time, we honour Marion Mahony and her creative contribution to Canberra with ‘The Marion’.
